Site checks and safe grinding
Before grinding, we check access, nearby structures and known underground services. The operator then works methodically to the agreed depth and area.
Choose the finish
Grindings can be left neatly over the former stump, removed from site, or followed by optional topsoil and grass seed preparation.
Grinding Depth and Site Finish
Stumps are normally ground approximately 200 to 300 mm below ground level. We can tailor the clean-up and final presentation to how you plan to use the area.
- Tidy pile onsite: Grind the stump and leave the grindings in a tidy pile onsite.
- Level finish: Remove the excess grindings and leave the remaining material level with the surrounding ground.
- Soil and grass seed: Remove all grindings, fill the hole with soil and apply grass seed for a tidier finish.
Please note: The grinder aerates the soil and mixes it with the grindings, creating air pockets. As the material settles and compresses over time, the finished area may sink slightly and could need additional soil later.
Stump grinding reduces the main stump and selected accessible surface roots. It does not excavate every underground root.

Stump Grinding vs Full Stump Removal
For most properties, stump grinding is the quickest and least disruptive way to remove an unwanted stump. It removes the visible stump below ground level while leaving most of the underground root system in place to naturally break down over time.
Full stump removal or excavation may be more appropriate where:
- Foundations or structures are being built over the area
- Significant excavation is already planned
- The entire root plate needs to be removed
- Underground works require complete clearance

How deep do you grind tree stumps?
For most jobs we can grind approximately 200-300 mm below ground level. The required depth can be adjusted depending on whether the area will be lawn, garden, paving or used for future construction.
Does stump grinding remove all the roots?
No. Grinding removes the main stump and can include accessible buttress or lateral roots by agreement. The deeper root system generally remains underground and decays naturally over time.
Can you reach a stump through a narrow gate or on a steep bank?

What happens to the stump grindings?
