New classrooms need space. When notable trees are part of the school grounds, getting that space takes careful tree pruning and planning to protect the trees.
Hardfell worked with BUILTsmart on the tree pruning stage of a new modular classroom project at Papatoetoe Central School in South Auckland. The job involved creating clearance around the proposed building location and delivery access, while keeping the pruning within the agreed arborist scope.
The first stage was completed on 12 August 2026. Installation support is planned for November, with temporary branch tie-backs included in the next stage.
Notable tree pruning and protection during construction
The school has mature London plane trees beside the proposed classroom location and an English oak over the accessway. These are notable trees, so the scope needed careful coordination with the project team and consulting arborist. For an overview of protected tree work, read our guide to notable tree pruning in Auckland.
Sean McBride of The Tree Consultancy Company prepared the arboricultural assessment. It considered the classroom position, foundation work, delivery route and overhead clearance needed to lift the building modules into place.
Site meetings and follow-up planning helped turn that assessment into a practical work scope. Our job was to provide the clearance the project needed while retaining as much of the trees as practicable.
Stage one: tree pruning for building clearance
The August scope included crown lifting selected London plane trees to provide approximately 12 metres of overhead clearance, work on a large scaffold limb over the building footprint, and minor pruning of the oak at the entrance.
That clearance was needed for the classroom modules and lifting equipment. The scope was guided by the arborist report, with the final requirements to be confirmed at the pre-start meeting.
The job also included chipping and removing the cut material, followed by a site tidy-up. The after photos show the space opened up around the proposed classroom location.

School tree services on a live site
Tree work at a school needs to fit around the people using it. This project had a school access plan covering fenced work areas, entry arrangements and vehicle movements around busy school periods.
The August planning also covered rigging equipment, barriers and coordination with the supervising arborist. Sorting those details before the crew starts helps everyone understand the work area, access requirements and agreed scope.
Stage two: temporary tree tie-backs
The next stage is supporting classroom installation. The preliminary programme currently has our team returning on Saturday 14 November 2026.
The planned method includes climbing the trees and temporarily restraining suitable branches with strops or slings to provide clearance for crane or Hiab operations. The arborist report specifically identifies pulling branches back during the lift as a way to minimise additional pruning.
Sometimes a branch only needs to move for the installation itself. Where its condition and flexibility allow, a temporary tie-back can create that working space without making an unnecessary permanent cut. Suitability and the required clearance still need to be assessed for the operation.

Tree work for schools and construction projects
This is the sort of work where the planning matters as much as the pruning. The builder needs room to deliver and install the classrooms. The school needs controlled access. The trees need a clear, assessed work scope.
If you are planning classroom upgrades, site access or construction around established trees in Auckland, get Hardfell involved early. Our school tree services in Auckland include tree pruning and clearance work. We also provide commercial tree services for construction projects. Common questions
Why was pruning needed before the classrooms arrived?
Branches extended into the proposed building and lifting area. The first stage created the agreed clearance ahead of modular classroom installation.
Can branches be moved instead of pruned?
Sometimes. Suitable branches can be temporarily tied back for an installation or access operation. Tree condition, flexibility and the clearance required determine whether that approach is appropriate.
Can notable trees be pruned for construction clearance?
Notable tree pruning needs an assessed scope that considers the tree, the clearance needed and the applicable approval requirements. On this project, the consulting arborist assessed the work before pruning. Temporary branch tie-backs are planned to minimise further cutting during installation.
Is the classroom installation complete?
No. The August pruning stage is complete. Installation support is currently planned for November 2026, with the date subject to the project programme.
