An Arborist for Notable Trees
Protected tree pruning needs more than a quick trim. We consider the tree’s health and structure, the clearance you need and how each cut will affect the retained canopy.
Our qualified arborists plan climbing, elevated work platforms and controlled branch lowering around buildings, gardens, roads and people. We keep the scope practical and explain what can be achieved before the crew starts.
For everyday maintenance on trees without notable-tree controls, see our tree pruning services.
What we check
- Tree identity and protection status
- Health, structure and previous pruning
- Branch sizes and live canopy affected
- Buildings, access routes and nearby services
- Reports, consent conditions and owner approvals
- Safe access, waste removal and site clean-up
Notable Tree Pruning Services
We recommend targeted work for the result you need, subject to the tree’s condition and applicable approvals.
Deadwood removal
Remove dead branches with careful access and controlled lowering where needed. We protect retained growth and the areas below the canopy.
Crown lifting
Assess selected lower branches for clearance above paths, driveways, school grounds and building access routes.
Clearance pruning
Plan selective cuts around roofs, gutters and infrastructure while retaining a suitable canopy and natural form.
Selective canopy work
Assess branch shortening or targeted canopy work against the tree’s structure, condition and pruning history.
Construction support
Coordinate tree work with builders and consulting arborists before deliveries, lifting operations or machinery access.
Temporary branch tie-backs
Assess whether suitable branches can be temporarily moved to create access and reduce the need for further pruning.
Protected Tree Pruning and Council Requirements
Check the Notable Trees Overlay and Schedule 10 before planning work. Auckland Council’s D13 rules cover the protected root zone as well as the tree.
Consent needs depend on the proposed activity and compliance with the relevant standards. A percentage alone does not establish whether pruning is permitted.
Read our notable tree pruning rules and consent guide for the detailed limits and checking steps.
Start with an assessed scope
We can help define the work and coordinate with your consulting arborist or planner where reporting or consent support is needed. Required approvals must be in place before the relevant work starts.
Auckland Council: D13 Notable Trees Overlay. Rule wording checked 7 October 2026. Confirm the current provisions and site conditions for your project.

How We Approach Notable Tree Work
Assess the tree and goal
Send your address, photos and any reports. We discuss the clearance or maintenance needed and arrange a site assessment where required.
Agree the scope
We set out the proposed pruning, access equipment and clean-up. We identify approval questions and coordinate with the project team.
Complete the agreed work
Once required approvals are in place, our crew carries out the agreed scope with suitable access, rigging and site controls.
Papatoetoe Central School: Pruning Ahead of New Classrooms
Hardfell worked with BUILTsmart on clearance for a modular classroom project beside confirmed notable London plane trees and an English oak. Site meetings and the consulting arborist’s assessment helped define the pruning scope.
Read the Papatoetoe Central School case study.

Planning the Clearance
The tree work needed to account for the proposed classroom location and delivery access while retaining as much of the trees as practicable.

Pruning Completed on 12 August 2026
The agreed clearance pruning is complete. November installation support and temporary branch tie-backs remain planned, with timing subject to the project programme.
Tree protection during construction
Getting involved early helps us assess clearance options before machinery or building modules arrive. Suitable temporary tie-backs may help retain branches that would otherwise obstruct access. They need an assessed method, monitoring and a clear removal plan.

Notable Tree Pruning Auckland FAQs
Do I need consent to prune a notable tree?
Permitted live pruning must meet every D13.6.1 standard: cuts no larger than 50mm at severance, no more than 10% live growth removed per calendar year, best arboricultural practice and retention of natural shape, form and branch habit. Work outside those standards requires resource consent. Other site controls may also apply.
Can you remove deadwood from a notable tree?
Yes. D13 lists deadwood removal by a qualified arborist as permitted. We assess access and lowering methods before starting.
Can you crown lift a protected tree for access?
We can assess the clearance required and propose selective crown lifting. The scope must suit the tree and applicable approvals. Send us the access dimensions, site plans and any arborist report.
Can branches be tied back instead of cut?
Sometimes. We assess suitable branches for temporary tie-backs during building delivery or construction access. Tree condition, flexibility, anchor points and the movement required determine whether it is practical. Approval requirements still need checking.
How much does notable tree pruning cost?
We price the assessed scope. Tree size, access, rigging, EWP hire, traffic controls, waste removal and any reporting or approval support affect the cost. Your quote sets out the work and what is included.
Can you work around schools and construction sites?
Yes. We coordinate with school staff, builders and consulting arborists to plan work areas, access and timing. Papatoetoe Central School’s August 2026 pruning is complete; November installation support and temporary branch tie-backs remain planned.
Do you chip the branches and tidy up?
Yes, when included in the quote. We agree whether to remove the cut material or leave suitable mulch onsite before work begins.
Are Hardfell’s arborists qualified and insured?
Hardfell is an NZARB Registered Master Arborist company with qualified and experienced arborists, SiteWise Gold, Tōtika prequalification and $10 million public liability insurance.
